What you should know about Sanitas laser eye surgery

The lamellar or LASIK technique is the most widely used due to its high success rates and rapid recovery for patients. The procedure involves sectioning, removing, and retracting a small superficial portion of the cornea (corneal flap) using a mechanical scalpel; then, with a laser, we "polish" the middle layer of the cornea, which is then covered again with the corneal flap that was previously removed.

The LASIK or Excimer Laser method allows for the correction of myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. It consists of laser shaping and remodeling of the corneal tissue, depending on the defect and the number of diopters to be corrected.

It is the appropriate method for treating myopia between 1 and 8 diopters and hyperopia between 1 and 5 diopters, with or without astigmatism.

The procedure is performed in a few minutes, painlessly, thanks to topical anesthesia using eye drops, without the need for hospitalization or postoperative eye bandaging. The total duration of the surgery is approximately 15 minutes per eye.

The advantages of LASIK are:

  • Accuracy and precision of the technique to polish the cornea and change its curvature.
  • Minimally invasive procedure and painless postoperative recovery.
  • Fast recovery.
  • Does not require postoperative eye bandaging.
  • Does not require hospitalization.

The PRK or photorefractive keratectomy technique allows for surgery on patients with a very thin or weak cornea, who cannot be treated with the LASIK technique, these being the less frequent cases.

It consists of an outpatient procedure that uses a special alcohol solution to separate the epithelium, the outermost layer of the cornea. Next, the laser is used to correct the curvature of the cornea and precisely eliminate the refractive defect.

The cornea usually heals within 48-72 hours, so it is left "bandaged" with a therapeutic contact lens, which is removed two weeks after the surgery. It allows for the correction of up to 6 diopters of myopia, 3 diopters of astigmatism, and low hyperopia, with the same diopters as LASIK.

The total duration of the procedure is approximately 15 minutes per eye, and full recovery occurs within 3-5 days.

The advantages of PRK are:

  • A solution for patients with thin corneal thickness who cannot undergo surgery with other refractive techniques.
  • Precision of the laser technique to polish the cornea, change its curvature, and thus achieve the correct focus of images.
  • Painless procedure and postoperative recovery.
  • Fast visual recovery.
  • Does not require hospitalization.
